Pluto Author Found Dead in Pakistan
Syed Saleem Shahzad, international journalist and author of the recently published Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond bin Laden and 9/11, has been found dead two days after he went missing, and three days after writing an article on possible complicity between Al Qaeda and elements of the Pakistani Navy.
Syed Saleem Shahzad was the Pakistan Bureau Chief of Asia Times Online and Editor in Chief of Asia Despatch. In November 2006, he was held along with his translator as a “guest” of the Taliban. This gave him exclusive insights into the inner workings of the Islamist group. These insights, along with past interviews he conducted with key Al Qaeda and Taliban commanders in the region—including Sirajuddin Haqqani (the most powerful Taliban commander in Afghanistan), Qari Ziaur Rahman (Al-Qaeda/Taliban commander in Hindu Kush region), and Sheikh Essa (Al Qaeda’s Waziristan based Takfiri ideological guide)—gave him a unique level of access that Western journalists can only dream of.
As we wait for more details on the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death, we offer up Shahzad’s recent publication to you for your review and background knowledge regarding his platform and journalistic investigation. The book, Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, offers in-depth analysis of the “war on terror” and the future of Al Qaeda that has never been told, and was just released in the US on May 24, 2011.
